Dynetics named a 2018 Aviation Week Laureate

Tuesday March 06, 2018

Dynetics, along with the United States Special Operations Command, have been selected by Aviation Week & Space Technology as a winner of the 61st Annual Laureate Awards, honoring extraordinary achievements in the global aerospace arena.

Within the Defense Weapons category, the Dynetics Small Glide Munition was named for "addressing an urgent warfighter need for a munition with increased lethality, reduced acoustic signature and expanded range by fielding - the GBU-69/B Small Glide Munition (SGM) was developed, tested and fielded in less than three years for less than $25 million."

The SGM is an enhanced capability, Stand-Off Precision Guided Munition that can be carried on AC-130 Gunships or Unmanned Aircraft Systems. The 42-inch munition is integrated into a Common Launch Tube and is compatible with the Battle Management System as well as other weapon interfaces. It has a diameter of 4.5 inches, a wingspan of 28 inches and weighs 60 pounds.

"The Small Glide Munition has provided game-changing capability to our Special Operations Forces in combat by significantly increasing lethality and range in the 50-pound weapon class while decreasing signature.  Teaming with Dynetics has enabled rapid fielding at an order of magnitude faster and more affordable than the vast majority of DoD munition programs," said the director of the USSOCOM Integrated Strike Program.

"We are extremely proud of our SGM team for taking the initiative to develop and field a system that our warfighters can use in the theater. The SGM is a munition that fills the gap of current weapon systems. The Special Operations Command has been an excellent partner and we value their leadership and guidance during SGM's development. Dynetics is thankful to be called an Aviation Week Laureate and it is a title we will honor," said David King, Dynetics chief executive officer.

Dynetics worked with many at the state and federal levels to see the SGM through to completion.

"It is great to hear that Alabama-based Dynetics has been recognized for its outstanding contributions to our nation's military.  Dynetics' work in global aerospace highlights Alabama's ability to produce cost-effective innovation. I am proud that our state continues to develop and attract skilled men and women who help provide advanced capabilities to our nation's war fighters, said Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL).

"Dynetics and all of the winners were selected by Aviation Week Network editors who reviewed dozens of nominations, embody the spirit of exploration, innovation and vision that will inspire others to strive for broad-reaching progress in aviation, aerospace and defense," said Aviation Week & Space Technology Editor-in-Chief Joseph C. Anselmo.

The winners of the 2018 Laureate Awards were honored on March 1, 2018 at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C.
