Our History

1970s

When Mr. Herschel Matheny and Dr. Steve Gilbert founded Dynetics in 1974, they committed to excellence in ethics, relationships, products, and services – to build a company that exemplified quality and integrity. In 1989, Dr. Marc Bendickson and Mr. Tom Baumbach led the Dynetics purchase from its founders through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). The commitment of the founders continues as the foundation for the establishment of Dynetics as an industry leader in Intelligence, Missiles, Aviation, Cyber, and Space.

Throughout our 37-year history, Dynetics has been a leader in ballistic missile defense and earned a reputation as a source of expert radar system analysis and engineering support for the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command (AMCOM) and the Missile and Space Intelligence Center (MSIC). Through these experiences, we garnered extensive expertise in intelligence data analysis for tactical weapon systems and ballistic missile defense, system analysis and engineering, radar design and performance evaluation, and signal processing.

1980s

In the early 1980s, Dynetics advanced our reputation for excellence to state-of-the-art radio frequency (RF) missile seeker systems performance evaluation, hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) and flight test support, and modeling and simulation (M&S). Dynetics' technological capabilities continued to expand to include electro-optic (EO) and infrared (IR) sensors; missile systems analysis and design; M&S; software development; foreign materiel exploitation (FME) of radars, seekers, and missiles; and development of prototype electronic, mechanical, and optical hardware. Today, we often serve as a prime contractor for the Air Force on specialized aerodynamic systems.

1990s

Dynetics experienced continued growth in the 1990s as we won several large contracts, added our Machining and Design Center, and built a new 45,000 square foot building. In the early 1990s, we won our first commercial automotive production contract from Chrysler; subsequently, we have built and supported electrical test systems for more than 60 Chrysler, Ford, and GM locations around the world. We have further expanded into prototype development for automotive Tier 1 suppliers.

2000s

In the decade of 2000, Dynetics completed a new Corporate Headquarters containing 160,000 square feet with special conference and training facilities and many more features.

Information technology (IT) and cybersecurity became a much more significant part of our business as we rolled out Dynetics AssuredComplianceTM, an integrated suite of tools for the certification and accreditation (C&A) process that saves up to 70 percent in costs. A $335 million contract award to provide IT services to NASA Marshall Space Flight Center and other NASA centers came in 2009.

Dynetics entered the space business in full force as we began developing micro-satellites in partnership with NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) and the Von Braun Center for Science and Innovation (VCSI). The first of these was FASTSAT-HSV. We purchased Orion Propulsion (OPI) in 2009, further expanding our capabilities in the space arena.

Our participation in the development and deployment of the Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB) system and the QuickMEDS express delivery system, in addition to the development and production of the Hellfire Mod-K fragmentation sleeve, further demonstrated the company's expertise and agility.

In general, our product development and manufacturing capabilities have continued to expand as we've produced more customized and off-the-shelf products.
